When Eric Williams established the Silver Room in Hyde Park, Chicago in 1997, he wasn’t just creating a store. He was also building a home.

“I always try to figure out ways to say yes; that’s my motto. I try to say yes as much as I can,” Williams said. So, when the local creatives started coming to the Silver Room and asked if they could use the space, whether it was to exhibit their artworks, hold a book signing, or learn to DJ, Williams said yes. In doing so, Williams laid a foundation for the Sound System Block Party, which brought different communities together through arts and music.

To Globetrotter’s Kennedy Ashinze, Williams shared insights on his iconic store’s impact, his new Bronzeville Winery venture, his love for Chicago, and his vision for the future.
