Daniel Mitchell of Space Available on Making Space for Nature
Globetrotter sat down with Daniel Mitchell, a champion of sustainability and the founder of environmentally friendly design company, Space Available, in Bali.
What happens after we reach the top? For Mitchell, who co-founded London’s LN-CC, which was voted the number-one store in the world in 2013, success was a time to start over. “I was just feeling quite unsatisfied about what I was doing. And asking a lot of questions in terms of what is it I’m trying to achieve, and, you know, is this important or not?”
Following the birth of his son, he moved across the world and settled in Bali, where he founded the record label Island of the Gods and became the Creative Director of Potato Head Bali. But Mitchell hadn’t done trying to make an impact yet. “I don’t want just to be a foreigner sitting here, trying to consume and do things not in the right way. So, for me, it’s, okay, well, what impact can I have while I’m here in terms of social aspect with the team that I’m building? How can I give back to them, how can I help educate the community, and also how can we elevate local designers, local crafts, people and ultimately help spread knowledge that I have?”
Eventually, he started Space Available in 2020. At Space Available, Mitchell shares his knowledge of sustainable designs and works with local artists to recycle plastic goods into eco-friendly designs.
“Ultimately, we’re building a collective or a community of like-minded individuals from bioscientists, from designers, artists, environmentalists, who can all come together to collaborate to ultimately build a better future and explore new system design and better ways of doing things.”
